Biography
Derek is the son of an Anglo father, Darious Maxwell and an Hispanic mother, Salma Alvarez. Derek's early years were spent among his large extended family in Las Sandias, New Mexico. Often considered an outcast by his brother and cousins, Derek felt completely different because he shared no common interests, particularly sports or girls.

One fateful night at the age of fourteen, Derek's life suddenly changed when he discovered a comet fragment in his backyard that transformed him. Cosmic energy coursed through his body and he received amazing powers.

Upon discovering his new abilities, Derek's parents contacted the World Hero Organization in Golden Bay City, California. W.H.O. encouraged them to enroll Derek within its training program. After an emotional farewell, he moved away from his hometown and the life he knew. Soon after his arrival, he was given his own apartment in W.H.O. Tower and instruction in becoming a full-fledged super hero.

Taking the name Kid Comet, he learned how to control his powers. As part of secret identity training, Derek attended a local high school like a normal teenager. Feeling that he finally fit in somewhere, he found happiness in his new life.

As he matured, Derek still wondered why he wasn't attracted to girls when, in his school's locker room, he noticed that he was interested in boys instead. Realizing for the first time there was a possibility he might be homosexual, Derek became scared that he would be labled an outcast all over again. Refusing to uncover the truth, he buried his secret attractions deep down.

Derek visited home less and less as the years passed, concentrating instead on becoming the best hero he could. It wasn't long before Kid Comet became the side kick of Captain Cosmos, who kept a wise and watchful eye over the young hero. Using his extraordinary powers, Derek defended Golden Bay City from villains both earthbound and extraterrestrial alike.

After several successful years working along side Captain Cosmos, Derek matured and updated his name to Blue Comet when he turned nineteen. Soon he was teamed-up with the fiery female hero, Sunstar. Together the duo became best friends and were referred to as the "Cosmic Crusaders" by the media thanks to their space-inspired code names. When Captain Cosmos retired, he named Blue Comet and Sunstar as his successors.

In addition to hiding his super hero identity from the public, Derek continued to deny the attractions he felt towards other men. Terrified that people would shun and ridicule him if the truth were known, Derek would always change the subject whenever the othe male heroes would talk about sex and women. Because of the image that W.H.O. portrays, the organization has never had an openly gay super hero. Derek feared that if he really were gay and was found out, he might be asked to leave.

One day Blue Comet and Sunstar's mutual W.H.O. agent Mr. Agnew, urged Sunstar to participate in "Operation Super-Couple" and have a romantic relationship with Zap-Man. Feeling she was trapped, Sunstar turned to Derek for advice. Derek saw an opportunity to mask his struggle with possibly being gay so he suggested that he and Sunstar volunteer to be a "super-couple". To which Sunstar said in her usual straightforward way, "But aren't you gay?"

He admitted that he wasn't really sure and t
o his relief, Sunstar offered her support. She explained that her younger bother Justin was gay and understood what Derek was going through. She suggested that Derek talk with him one day. Still very unsure and confused, Derek considered her suggestion.

In order to deal with Mr. Agnew's scheme, Derek suggested that they could help each other out by pretending to be the couple that their agent was looking for. Finding it a preferable alternative to dealing with Zap-Man, and knowing she could help Derek keep his secret, Sunstar agreed.

At first, the charade was easy enough to pull off. However, Derek's life changed once again when, a few weeks later, he actually met Justin and found himself infatuated.

When Blue Comet rescued Justin from a fall from the evil Strato's flying City of Doom, it was love at first sight. Unable to contain his attraction, he confessed his true feelings for Justin to Sunstar. She arranged for Blue Comet to check in on her brother as he recovered from his near fatal fall. After a few nervous conversations, he finally mustered up the courage to ask Justin out. A relationship between the two quickly developed and it wasn't long before Derek revealed his secret identity to Justin.

Six months into their relationship, Derek moved out of his apartment at the W.H.O. building, moved into a house with Justin and began his first real relationship. However, he still remaines uneasy about being discovered as a gay super hero, as he would rather face an entire horde of villainous madmen!
